Joy was launched by Jean Patou in 1930 with an outright extravagant premise: one ounce required roughly 10,600 jasmine flowers and 28 dozen May roses, more than any perfume house had used before. It's built around a dense floral heart — Grasse jasmine, May rose, and ylang-ylang — laid over a musky, sandalwood base with just enough green bitterness up top to keep it from tipping sweet. It's a scent with a real pedigree — voted Scent of the Century at the 2000 FiFi Awards, beating out Chanel No. 5 for the honor.
